I’m not kidding when I say, there were millions upon millions of golden leaves – all paving the way for a fabulous walk alongside the River Calder at Calderbridge. Many thanks to my friend, Ady, who suggested that I give this route a try. I highly recommend it.
To find the riverside path, go to the rear (left hand side) of St. Bridgets Church at Calderbridge, and pass through the gate highlighted by a public footpath sign. Grid ref. NY 042061.
This is a tranquil walk, for most abilities. Sandstone cliffs on the far banks are dramatic and the river alternates between deep pools and fast stretches. It is a popular spot for trout and salmon fishermen. Look out for dippers and wagtails, as well as herons and kingfishers!
