Ennerdale Water Circuit

Splendid Views:

This was a really enjoyable walk in glorious weather. The route took me on a circuit of the lake, through woods and grazing land and offered up splendid views of the surrounding hills.

Ennerdale Water is a glacial lake in the north western Lake District and is surrounded by rugged hills and forestry plantations.

The lake is important for its diverse lake shore habitats and waters which are home to Salmon, Trout, Arctic Char and otter. The surrounding landscape is of European conservation importance for its special habitats and is home to a range of wildlife including red squirrels, cuckoo, deer, marsh fritillary and peregrine.

There were a number of really friendly folk that I bumped into walking the Wainwright Coast to Coast route. A special shout out goes to the Aussie chap who took the mickey out of me for huffing and puffing while crossing Anglers Crag.

The Route:

Park at Bleach Green (NY 085154) car park.

Leave by the gate at the back of the car park and follow a well surfaced lane, down to Ennerdale Water. Turn left and cross the bridge over the weir.

Follow the track to Bowness Knott, and then head towards the southern end of the lake. From there, the return journey takes you up over Anglers Crag. The climb over Anglers Crag is quite steep and includes a short exposed scramble. with a significant drop into the lake.

The walk is 6.5 miles long and takes around 3 to 4 hours depending on how long you stop to enjoy the views.

Yikes! There are a few scary bits in that video. Do the steep drops not bother you?
Thanks, by the way. I loved it.
