In the news of late here in the UK, and across the world, there has been much discussion over clowns chasing and frightening people. I’ve seen commentary written in a few places regarding the visit of the Grinch to Whitehaven last Christmas, where people have compared the antics of the colourful character to what is occurring with these clowns. And, when I say clowns, I don’t mean the circus type.. I do mean clowns.. the guys are idiots!
Last year, I helped organise Christmas celebrations in Whitehaven. I’m not doing so this year (and that is an entirely different story), but I wanted to address the comparison between what I was involved with last year, and that of the clowns that are terrorising our streets.
The visit of the Grinch to Whitehaven was an organised event. He was chaperoned at all times, and the visit was carried out during daylight hours. In comparison, the clowns are unregulated, while hiding on street corners, in the dark. Some are also armed with fake knives, with the aim of frightening people.
The Grinch, on the other hand was a fun character, who brought smiles and laughter to many faces – including those from Cumbria Police, one of whom even bought the colourful character a cup of coffee for his work. So please, don’t judge a book by it’s cover when you don’t know all the facts.
